چکیده

Chip Multi-Processor (CMP) has recently become a mainstream microprocessor. CMP’s allow multiple threads executing on a single processor chip at the same time, thus promise to deliver higher throughput performance. However, resource sharing among the threads executing on the same processor chip can cause conflicts and hurt the performance. Thus obtaining high performance and scalability on CMP servers is a challenging task. In this paper, we evaluate the performance impact of the resource conflicts on an example high-end CMP server (Sun Fire E25K) using HPC applications parallelized using OpenMP standard.

Precedence Constraint Posting for the RCPSP with Uncertain, Bounded Durations

The Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem is an important problem in project management, manufacturing and resource optimization. We focus on a variant of RCPSP with time lags and uncertain activity durations. We adopt a Precedence Constraint Posting approach and add precedence constraints to the original project graph so that all resource conflicts are solved and a consistent assignm...

Towards RDF Query Processing on the Intel Single-Chip Cloud

Chip makers are envisioning hundreds of cores in future processors for throughput oriented computing. These processors, called manycore processors, require new architectural innovations for scaling to a large number of cores as compared with today’s multicore processors. We report an early study on the performance of RDF query processing on a manycore processor. In our study, we use the Intel S...

Sustainable Computing: Informatics and Systems

Several emerging application domains in scientific computing demand high computation throughputs to achieve terascale or higher performance. Dedicated centers hosting scientific computing tools on a few high-end servers could rely on hardware accelerator co-processors that contain multiple lightweight custom cores interconnected through an on-chip network. With increasing workloads, these many-...

Performance and Power Analysis of RCCE Message Passing on the Intel Single-Chip Cloud Computer

The number of cores integrated on a single chip increases with each generation of computers. Traditionally, a single operating system (OS) manages all the cores and resource allocation on a multicore chip. Intel’s Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC), a manycore processor built for research use with 48 cores, is an implementation of a “cluster-on-chip” architecture. That is, the SCC can be configur...

Exploring the Potential of CMP Core Count Management on Data Center Energy Savings

A data center’s power and energy consumption is a crucial design issue, and is often a fundamental determiner of its performance potential. Conventional power/energy management approaches data centers have focused on uniprocessor rather than multiprocessor servers and on techniques such as Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS). Given the increasing use of chip multiprocessors (CMPs) and ...
